Effective At-Home Pain Management: A Physician’s Perspective on the RS-4i® Plus

Meet Dr. Owens

Dr. William Owens is the CEO of the National Spine Group and has been a chiropractor in private practice for over 24 years. He serves as adjunct faculty at the College of Chiropractic Medicine at Cleveland University-Kansas City and the Jacobs School of Medicine at SUNY Buffalo.

Electrotherapy for At-Home Pain Management

For many of Dr. Owens’s patients, pain has become debilitating, restricting movement and making everyday tasks—like attending medical appointments—challenging.

To provide pain management between visits, Dr. Owens prescribes the RS-4i Plus, a high-frequency device that combines Interferential Therapy (INF) and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) to deliver powerful pain relief and muscle rehabilitation.

  • What is Interferential Therapy (INF)? Interferential therapy uses two slightly different high-frequency signals (>5000 Hz) that intersect within the body to create an area of interference – a “sweet spot” in the treatment area where the therapeutic benefit is most pronounced. The nature of high-frequency assures that these signals are able to overcome the skin’s natural resistance and reach nerves deep in the tissue, providing fast-acting pain relief via the Gate Control Theory. As an added advantage, they also offer long-lasting pain relief via the release of endogenous opiates.

  • What is Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES)? Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation (NMES) uses alternating low-frequency signals (<100 Hz) to treat muscle tissue. These low-frequency signals cause skeletal muscle to contract and release in a pattern that acts as a blood and lymphatic fluid pump – i.e., the blood pump mechanism of action. The key benefits of this contract-and-release pattern are that it prevents disuse atrophy, increases circulation and re-educates tissue.

“The focus really on using the RS-4i was for patients to be able to manage their pain independently of being at the office.” says Dr. Owens. “This was important to me as a provider so we could prolong their ability to manage it. But was also critically important to the healthcare system to that we’re not putting patients on medicines that are harmful when they can use a system like the RS-4i Plus.”

Not only does the RS-4i Plus provide prescription-grade pain relief, but it also gives patients newfound freedom—offering side-effect-free, at-home pain management.

Real-World Results with the RS-4i Plus

Dr. Owens recalls a particularly difficult case—a patient with a severe disc herniation in the middle back.

“When he went in for surgery, his pain level was a 10 out of 10,” Owens explains. “He ended up with about a 6 out of 10 after the surgery, but the RS-4i brought that pain down to about a 3.”

This dramatic improvement reinforced Dr. Owens’ confidence in Interferential Therapy and Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation as effective treatment modalities.

Helping Patients Return to a Functional Life

“Sometimes these injuries are permanent, and we just have to have the patient living a functional life,” states Dr. Owens. “If we can get them feeling better, we can stabilize them and they can go home and still be a functional part of their family.”

For many, incorporating electrotherapy into their treatment plan is key to ongoing relief. The ability to self-manage pain—whether during the day or in the middle of the night—ensures that patients receive relief when they need it most.
